I first met Diane when I was deciding whether to run for Mayor of Freeport. From the very beginning, she wasn’t just a supporter or a volunteer—she became one of my closest friends. Diane was always there with an active ear, sound advice, and consistently pushing me to be not just a better candidate, but the best person I can be. The kind of person who doesn’t just show up when it’s convenient, but when it matters.

When I told her that I was not only running for State Senate, but also switching parties, I put my friend in a difficult position. As a woman who represents the very definition of moral integrity and true Democratic values, she made her disapproval clear—not of my decision to run, but of my decision to do so as a Republican.

And I understood that.

Diane was faced with a choice many people talk about but few actually make: toe the party line, or put people over party.
